Dr. Mackenzie is a Florida native, born and raised in Jacksonville. Dr. Mackenzie was accepted into the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2002. After graduation, he traveled to Columbus, Ohio, for a one year rotating internship at MedVet Medical & Cancer Center for Pets. He then returned to Jacksonville to begin his surgical training with Affiliated Veterinary Specialists for a one year surgical internship.
Dr. Mackenzie completed his three year surgical residency at MedVet Medical & Cancer Center for Pets in Columbus, Ohio, finishing his surgical training. He then returned to Jacksonville in 2007, becoming a staff surgeon at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists, Jacksonville.
Dr. Mackenzie has special interests in orthopedic, soft tissue and neurosurgery. He lives with his wife, Rebecca, who is also a veterinarian, their daughter, twin sons and their Golden Retriever, Palmer.

Dr. Erne was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. He comes from a hard working family of educators and was first in his family to earn a professional doctoral degree. From a very early age, Dr. Erne exhibited a strong interest in animals which provided the motivation for him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
Dr. Erne attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, where he studied animal science. During his undergraduate years, Dr. Erne had the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in Australia which he considers an invaluable experience. After returning from Australia, Dr. Erne took the fast track through his undergraduate studies to gain early acceptance into Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine where he graduated with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 2001.
Dr. Erne was then selected for a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. While at Missouri, he met his future wife, fellow veterinarian, Nicole, who he married in 2003. After completing his internship, Dr. Erne moved to Florida, where he worked as a general practitioner in Jupiter for three years. He pursued surgical training at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Jacksonville, FL, completing a one year surgical internship and a three year small animal surgery residency in 2009. Dr. Erne became board certified in small animal surgery with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2011. Since then, he has been practicing as a full time, small animal surgeon in Jacksonville, where he specializes in advanced orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures.
Dr. Erne and his wife are parents of two fantastic daughters. When not treating his patients, Dr. Erne can be found attending numerous gymnastics meets and dance competitions with his daughters. Being a fitness enthusiast, he will also be found in the gym where he trains many hours each week.

Carolyn M. McKune, DVM, DACVAA

Dr. McKune graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. After a year in private practice, she returned to academics to teach students how to perform routine elective procedures at Washington State University. This position prompted her to advance her skills in pain management.
After completing a rotating internship at Washington State University, Dr. McKune began her Anesthesia and Critical Patient Care residency at the University of California, Davis. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia since 2009.Dr. McKune has been with Affiliated Veterinary Specialists since 2014, after working in academics and as an independent contractor, and she couldn’t be happier about the job! Areas of interest for Dr. McKune include pain management (read her work here), high fidelity simulated learning, and anesthesia of the critical patient. Those interested in small companion animal anesthesia are invited to explore her book, Small Animal Anesthesia Techniques, co-authored by Ms. Amanda Shelby.
Dr. McKune is blessed with a family that includes two amazing children, and a caring and supportive husband, who is also a veterinarian. Outside of the office, you’ll find her happily playing the role of “Mommy.” The family would not be complete without their menagerie of animals, including two big dogs trapped in small bodies, Lenny and Grape, and the self-appointed most important family members, their cats, Midge and Malcolm. Add in one white cheeked mud turtle, and the chaos is complete.
