Onslow County got lucky.

Hurricane Matthew roared ashore in North Carolina and — despite pockets of damage — largely spared Onslow and its immediately surrounding counties. But others weren’t so lucky.

Parts of North Carolina are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Matthew — namely in the form of massive flooding throughout the region as the Tar, Neuse and Cape Fear rivers overflow. Here are some ways Onslow County residents can lend a helping hand.

The preferred method of donation is financial assistance, United Way of Onslow County president Craig Wagner and American Red Cross public affairs volunteer Charlotte Rodriguez said. That is because, logistically speaking, it’s easier to transport money than non-perishable items.

But there are also collections points set up for non-perishable food and/or other donations to take to Hurricane Matthew Flood victims:

JACKSONVILLE

• The Daily News, 724 Bell Fork Road in Jacksonville, will be collecting nonperishable food items. The donations will be brought to the Salvation Army.

• Sprint Store, 215 Western Blvd. in Jacksonville Oct. 14-19. The donations will be taken to the Salvation Army in Fayetteville.

• National Dodge, 2223 N. Marine Blvd. in Jacksonville will be accepting water, wrapped snacks, toiletries, diapers, baby formula and juices every day 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.

• The United Way of Onslow County is still accepting volunteers to help with the clean-up of debris from Hurricane Matthew at VolunteerOnslow.org.

MOREHEAD CITY

Lookout Ford, 5557 U.S. 70 in Morehead City will be accepting water, wrapped snacks, toiletries, diapers, baby formula and juices every day 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.

SWANSBORO

Mills & Thomas Furniture, 807 W. Corbett Ave. in Swansboro will be accepting water, wrapped snacks, toiletries, diapers, baby formula and juices every day 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.

PINE KNOLL SHORES

Pine Knoll Shores Town Hall will have a drop-off point Monday in the parking lot near the dog park. Donors are asked to bring their cars to the back parking lot rather than entering the front door of the building. Supplies needed include water, juices, wrapped snacks, toiletries, diapers, baby formula, cleaning supplies, rubber gloves, sponges, mops and buckets.

KINSTON

Massey Toyota, 4760 Hwy 70 W in Kinston will be accepting water, wrapped snacks, toiletries, diapers, baby formula and juices every day 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.

NEW BERN

• Toyota of New Bern, 5010 U.S. 70 in New Bern will be accepting water, wrapped snacks, toiletries, diapers, baby formula and juices every day 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.

• Hyundai of New Bern, 2910 U.S. 70 in New Bern will be accepting water, wrapped snacks, toiletries, diapers, baby formula and juices every day 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.

SURF CITY

• CFCC Alston Burke Surf City Center in Surf City will be accepting water, non perishable food, diapers, wipes, bug spray, cleaning supplies, toiletries, blankets, and paper products through Oct. 19. Pender County Humane Society also needs blankets, towels, and cleaning supplies as well. CFCC staff/personnel will be transporting the donations to Burgaw on Oct. 20.

NORTH CAROLINA

• The North Carolina United Methodist Church is accepting donations via PayPal at or through your local congregation.

• The Salvation Army is also accepting financial donations by calling 800-SAL-ARMY or texting STORM to 51555 to receive a donation link. Donations are also accepted at

• The North Carolina Baptist Men are accepting financial donations at their website:

• The Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh is accepting financial donations at

• The Presbytery of New Hope is accepting monetary donations at NHPresbytery.org.

• The United Way of North Carolina has set up a “text to give code” for people who want to donate to a specific county. To donate to a specific county, text “UWHELPSNC” to 41444 and indicate what specific amount to donate, then that United Way will distribute the funds, or donate online at
